This fall lifestyle editorial embraces surrealism and transparency, drawing inspiration from the "Modern Gothic" interior trends and Brutalist ideals.
The Gothic and femininity intertwine closely, stemming from a literary genre that emerged in the 19th century. It often portrayed women as delicate and ethereal within supernatural settings, highlighting a compelling interplay of light and darkness. This contrast is particularly captivating to me. The era prioritised emotional sensitivity over intellectual pursuits for women, which imbued its works with profound emotive power — a sentiment I sought to evoke in this editorial.
Drawing on a haunting and eerie aesthetic, the editorial employs contrasting textures such as concrete, wood, and sheer fabrics. It juxtaposes cold backdrops of cement or stone with warm, golden utensils adorned with dried foods and spices. Shapes are emphasised, such as corn shaped into silhouettes reminiscent of birds, exploring abstract forms. Leading lines, found in branches and scattered spices, guide the eye throughout the compositions. Minimalism is central to the editorial's theme, directing focus squarely on its intended subjects.
